Medium In Art

Medium in Art refers to the exact type of material used to create a work of art. This would include a virtually endless supply of different things that could be used, including oils (oil paints), watercolors, sculpting material, such as granite, acrylics, and many combinations of the above and more. This last category mentioned would be called 'mixed media'.

As for my own work in the art field, I prefer to use oils, but there are times when i do mix the medium with watercolor when the painting is taking too long to dry. The water colors dry much faster than oil paint, which sometimes requires up to several weeks before the existing paint can be worked over, but the watercolors are also very fragile. Reverse painting on glass also delays the drying time, by not giving the paint a universal area as canvas or rice paper does. The paint that touches the glass is on an airtight, and waterproof surface.

"Cheeta" is done in water colors on a 16" x 20" heavy paper made for this exact use. In addition to the very heavy and stiff paper, there are also some much finer rice papers available for the H20 paint.

This is a reverse painting on glass, done in oils, of the same type of subject. The glass pane is 12" x 16". As you can see, it gives an entirely different effect.

This is an oil painting on canvas, completely different from either of the above. So many methods to express an idea. Which way to go?

It's hard to know what medium you'll want to use until a few different one have been tried, but trying to do it is the fun part! Even though I have tried the different media of painting, and love to work in each, I keep returning to reverse painting on glass.
