Art For Kids

We did 'Art for Kids' This is Joshua! Isn't it beautiful?

Art for kids is a great way to get to know your grandchildren! Even though I only have two grandchildren so far, every time they come over to visit, (which is never often enough for me) I try to make the most of it. It isn't as though I have a lot to offer them, but I do what I can. I would like to make each trip here special enough for them to look forward to coming again. For the most part, their parents do that part with the camping and visits to theme parks. But I would like to make 'Grandma's house to be a good place for kids to want to go to, too!

Would you like to know how we did it? Just follow...

We started out in the beginning picking ferns and other natural fauna from the back yard. Then we came in the house. We painted the old piece of counter top with a water based paint, and mixing artist's water colors in it. We mixed them real good!

Then we had to get our rice paper wet, and let it blot on an old bath towel...

Next, we laid some ferns, berry bush leaves, and blades of grass on top of the wet Paint. It's o k if they overlap one another.

And Jacob added a little more in...

And Joshua kept helping, too.

Then, Josh layed the damp rice paper over the sticky paint and ferns. It was a dirty job! Lucky Josh was here!

And then we pressed the damp paper down on the leaves! WE pressed and we pressed, and we pressed some more!

When we couldn't find any more places to press it down, Josh very carefully lifted the paper off the paint and fauna. Then he laid it, paint side up on the bath towel for it to dry. Then we matted and framed the monotypes, so they could go back home with the boys!

It's been a year since Joshua, Jacob and I did this fun, no, very fun project. Since that time, I have been working more on projects for children, art for kids. What I have come up with so far, is pretty neat, too! Holiday decorations are the theme of this, and even small children can get involved! Depending on how many kids, and how much enthusiasm is at hand, I could see every window in the house with a christmas bulb or three painted on it! After the festivities, the paint can be removed with a razor blade, possibly to be replaced with other decorations for other holidays. What I have available is a set of kits, to do the paintings in 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" frames, or patterns for painting directly on the window glass.

Matting and Framing the Masterpiece!

Our next task was a mighty one! The back side of the masterpiece needed to be sprayed with an adhesive, and then glued onto the cardboard backing of the frame. Jacob was ready for the job at hand! Joshua helped with the glueing it down to the cardboard.

We had to put the mat in behind the glass, one part I always manage to forget, and then the monotype. Then we pressed all the tabs down around the inside edge of the frame. There! We did it! Art for kids! Isn't it great?

Jacob and Joshua just left here to go home today. I really hope that they left with a good memory. It was for me! My daughter and Josh made a surprise stop last Sunday, saying they would be here for the weekend next week, which was yesterday and today. My youngest daughter had allerted me a week before, so I made sure not to schedual any overtime. Thank Goodness for that! So, anyway, I told my eldest that I would like to do a special project with the boys on this weekend, so we did! We did monotypes! Art for kids!
