Antiques and collectables in the gallery, as you may observe, includes a wide range of interests. My childhood was spent in a workshop , so I learned how to restore and refinish not entirely limited to the restoration of furniture. As an adult, wanting to decorate my home, as well as keep it utilitarian, I began to play around a little, taking old parts, and putting them back together in a different way. This was to adapt the not very valuable, or not in very good shape pieces into something more user friendly, while still retaining the aesthetic value of the original piece.

A case in point would be what was a 'Jenny Lind' 3/4 sized bed. Now to special order a matress and box spring can get very costly, and, let's face it, people have gotten taller and bigger over the last century and a half. So how much demand is there for the original 'Jenny Lind'? Not a lot. But, if you could keep the 'Jenny Lind' look in a piece of furniture that would be used much more often, would this not be worthwhile?

Another passion in my life has been chairs. My parents needed someone to keep up the cane work on chair seats at all times through my life, so I learned to cane at a very early age. I was helping my older sisters with it before I started school, and I was good at it by the time I was ten years old. As an adult, I also learned to do rush seats with harvested cattails, splint, and shaker tape seats. Even though I never had much time to sit, I spent a good deal of my life preparing a place for it. On occasion, I still do work on chair seats, but now, it's a matter of choice and not need. My reverse painting on glass is a much higher priority at this time in my life.

The knowledge of and ability to refinish was a very good background for preparing the window sashes that I paint in, too! Usually when the sash gets to mee, it is in desperate need of being dressed up!
